Frank Muller Perpetual Calendar

With a notable and respected third-party author, as well as a grand tale to tell, the IWC book served most of its purposes relatively well. But that alone wouldn’t get it a ton of attention outside the world of watch lovers and IWC aficionados. So IWC decided that it wanted to sex things up a bit, so that their new investment would get noticed by even more people, and further entice people to check it out that might not otherwise.

Like I said the case is 42mm wide and in steel with 300 meters of water resistance. Finishing is really cool with some contrast polishing (such as on the lugs). The rotating diver's bezel is done well. The edges are a little bit sharp, but it does have a cool precision cut feel to it. The indicators on the bezel are cut in to the black surface with the numerals in a stencil font that matches the unique stencil font on the watch dial. There are tons of little style details all over the watch that are hard to tell because it looks like such a functional instrument. It really is a "pretty machine." Take for instance the tapered date window frame to help with keeping the shapes and lines balanced on the dial and the nicely applied hour markers on the face. Given the pedigree of the watch and the price, you can be sure that Jaeger-LeCoultre made sure the details on the watch will satisfy you and the demanding members of the Navy SEALs.

2010 is the second year of Alpina being the official timekeeper for the storied 12 Hours of Sebring race in Florida. The manufacturer celebrated this partnership with the production of a limited edition, two-timezone chronograph creatively called the 12 Hours of Sebring Automatic Chrono GMT. The watch is strongly influenced by style elements of race cars. This concept, unless overdone like in several AP Offshores, works fantastically. The sporty, yet subtle style and quality specs of this watch appealed to me when I first received the press release but playing with the actual timepiece at Baselworld 2010 was when I really got to appreciate it.

Some people will love the beauty and imagination of the watch. Others will consider the design perhaps a bit frightening. Large creature like bulging eyes coming out of a mechanical metal instrument in luxury materials. It is a weird watch of course - probably the weirdest looking piece to come from MB&F yet, and that is actually saying a lot.

The Malton 160 Cushion is still just an image (seen below), so I didn't get to see it. It looks to have a Valjoux 7750 automatic movement and a great style. I would gladly wear it. Love that red cabochon in the crown. An interesting way of inserting color into the watch (there is also a thin strip of red in the 8 o'clock hour indicator).

OK, so enough about the making of the book, is it worth checking out? That is a good question, because it isn’t exactly cheap. While you get a beautiful, useful, and heavy tome, the IWC history book costs about 250 Swiss Francs. To be honest I was skeptical at first. It is easy to put in a ton of pictures, and dress up text with glossy pages and a fancy publishing job. That isn’t the case here. What impressed me most about the book was the organization. Each major watch collection has its own section. So let’s say you are interested in the Aquatimer. IWC dive watches have an entire section complete with history, technology, and a review of many models — both modern and historic. It gives people a way to feel much more connected to watches they may have, as well as learn about potential collections they are interested in.

The 900 S name means "900 Schwartz," which is "black" in German. The "S" label on an Sinn watch means that it is a black version of a timepiece that is also available in a non black version. I just get so much more excited about the 900 S rather than the 900. The watch has a Swiss ETA Valjoux 7750 movement, but it has a GMT module on it. Thus the watch has a GMT hand. It also has an internal rotating diver's bezel - but in this instance Sinn calls it a pilot bezel. That might mean it rotates in both directions, and as you can see, each number in the 60 minute scale is printed out. Makes for a neat look. The hands and markers on the dial are easy to read and lack nonsense - they are also applied with a bunch of lume. On the back of the watch case, engraved in the caseback are various measurement conversion tables - a nice functional use of the caseback for quick and rough conversions.

While 44mm wide isn't huge for a diver, it is 18mm thick - which is on the girthier side. A Much of this is due to the thick crystal and large rotating diver's bezel. The Classico name doesn't personally work for me. Dievas says that this watch embodies those traits more desired in dive in a classic sense. You also have a very handsome three-link metal bracelet (leather strap is also available). While it may be all well and true that the Classico Blue has classic dive watch characteristics, it just doesn't look like a "Classico" to me. Look at other Dievas dive watches and the dial design looks as though it fits right in. They like playing with black backgrounds and interesting designed to arrange the dial components. The dial works, but I think the hands are a bit petite. This usually won't cause a problem unless you are underwater, and it might be a tab bit hard to read the watch when it is darker, under water. Uniquely used for the watches, and in retro fashion is the crystal. It is a very special type of Plexi-Glass. The idea is to look like the acrylic crystals of the past. It is domed, and specially treated to be quite hard and more scratch resistant that similar crystals. It also has a highly increased resistant to UV rays and chemicals, plus in to increase the "depth of shine" (not totally sure what that means).

Breguet's famous Type XX watches are among the first high-end timepieces that I fell in love with back in college. I couldn't afford one then, and I still don't have one today, but the dream of owning one of the Breguet "Type" aviator style watches remains strong. They come in a few varieties, such as the Type XX, Type XXI, and the newer (and sort of silly) Type XXII.

A lange Sohne Homage to FALange watches

The planetarium weighs about 100 kilos and is 150mm tall, and about 91cm in diameter. The table and mechanics where done by the mechanic Rémy Chauvin. Like all good stubborn watch makers, Louis Moinet refuses to let go of Pluto as a planet in the solar system, so it is right there along with the rest of the planets as well as the Sun. The contraption features the Sun in the center with each of the planets moving around it in real time. The planets and Sun where made by artist Jean-Yves Kervévan. Each of the paints and varnishes used are hand made, and dust from meteorites is used on some of the orbs . Only the Earth has its moon represented which revolves around the Earth. There is a scale for the zodiac that show was period we are in. Each of the constellations of the zodiac is covered in gold dust and top Wesselton VVS diamonds (154 of them totaling 5.6 carats). The planetarium mechanics are a bit of a mystery to me right now. I know they are all well made, but I am not sure if the device is electrically powered, or somehow manually wound. It is a pretty neat item to have in one's study or foyer, but I would dare not place the Meteoris with the watches in a place where people can snag one of them easily. The Meteoris also has a foot switch that can be activate to show you the rotation of the plants sped up, as simply watches them move in real time would be very slow.

Wearing an Hublot watch will be more than just about the design and the movement - but will also have a little bit of each event or activity the JCB has aligned the brand with. I mention this concept to him and he smiles. The connection being obvious to him as it was his intention all along. Hublot is a lifestyle, not just a watch. Hublot owners want to life the Hublot ideal. To be like its ambassadors, to think of the events it partners with each time they look at the watch. Is there a little bit of World Cup in each glance at your Big Bang? To many there may be. JCB is strangely quiet about the topic of endorsements and further brand connections. Though he does smirk at my questions. I can tell he has a lot more planned up his sleeve for the future.

A while ago I met with the legendary Bill Yao. To some of you that name instantly evokes respect and attention, and for many of you that name is new. I will let Bill give you his total history but he is considered one of the finer watch modifiers in the US. He was one of the guys that would take a watch you already had and do things like change the dial, hands, bezel, lume, etc... Helping people to achieve their "dream look." Then Bill started MKII watches - his own brand that offers ready built watches, as well as ones with a number of customization options in the spirit of what Mr. Yao is most known for.
