Top Five Useless Watch Complications ABTW Editors' Lists

The Sinn U1 is a relatively heavy watch. On the tegimented bracelet, with a couple of links removed, it comes in close to 1/2 pound. The 44mm case is just right for my almost 7 1/2 wrist and is somewhat comfortable, while (again) heavy. This is especially true since as mentioned, Sinn places the crown at 4 o'clock instead of the common 3 o'clock.  This makes the crown easy to grasp while also avoiding putting any pressure on your wrist as you move your arm and your hand.

HourTime Show Watch Podcast Episode 133 – A Quintet of Time

HourTime Show Watch Podcast Episode 133 – A Quintet of Time

To those who may not be familiar, a regulator watch is the kind where the functions of hours, minutes and seconds are separated and take their own place on a watch dial. The typical regulator layout is to have two small sub-dials, one at the 12 o’ clock position counting hours, another at the 6 o’clock position counting seconds, with a main single hand from the centre of the dial, counting minutes. Minor variations exist, but this is the typical way.

What do you think about Switzerland's choice to enter in a free-trade agreement with China? Was this decision motivated by the interests of a few watch industry stakeholders or will this benefit the country overall? How will this effect Chinese luxury consumption and tourism? And how will this affect US and European watch retailers who rely on tourist purchases?

Thomas P. Stafford's Gold Omega Speedmaster

For 2013 one of the limited edition A. Lange & Sohne watches will be this neat looking and very high-end Grand Lange 1 Lumen timepiece. The piece is a mix of a few ideas that Lange has offered over the years. While typically very heavy on the "look what cool new stuff we developed," language, German A. Lange & Sohne is much more straight-forward in how they discuss this watch. In fact, while this piece will sell rather well, it is a sort of Frankenstein's monster of Lange using ideas from a few past watches together without anything really new. It is a great watch, but it does lack that "wow" factor Lange is usually able to deliver with their new products. I will however say that what is new, is very useful.

While I love the steel bracelets, I am merely OK with the straps. They are supposed to look like textile, but feel rubbery and are a bit thinner than I'd like. They are designed well enough, but I think I would prefer an alligator or more complex leather strap. Or alternatively, a textured rubber strap. Perhaps I am missing the point of them. Having said that, they do complement the look of the Ball for BMW watches nicely enough.

One of the more intriguing things about this watch is its use of built-in gestures (relying on the accelerometer and gyroscope in the case). The star of this show, though, is the fact that this watch can do something that is being labeled as "private calling". In short, when you receive a call, you raise your hand to your ear, and the phone picks up and you talk away. This is courtesy a speaker (and microphone) that live on the underside of the strap, enabling the sound to be amplified by your cupped hand (kind of like putting a phone in an empty water glass). Hopefully it doesn't add much bulk while you're pretending to be Dick Tracy or Michael Knight (via the Knight Rider).

IWC Aquatimer Replica Watch Collection For SIHH

Facing bankruptcy in the expanding wake of the quartz revolution, the Royal Oak is the watch that saved Audemars Piguet and made them the brand they are today. Knowing they needed revolution and not evolution, Audemars Piguet brought in none other than Gerald Genta to design a watch that could introduce the brand to a bigger market. Genta created the AP Royal Oak ref 5402ST which launched in 1972 with a price tag so aggressive that not only did it vastly exceed the price of any of its competition, it even out-priced most gold watches on the market. The world had no reference for a steel luxury sport watch, making the Royal Oak an all-in play by Audemars Piguet. While the Royal Oak may have been a polarizing idea from its inception, it created a new watch archetype, the luxury steel sport watch, and acceptance grew fast enough to keep Audemars Piguet in business and the distinctive Genta design is a now an integral part of their brand iconography Starting around ,000. audemarspiguet.com

The semi-finished components need to be decorated with the required markings, such as numerals, minute tracks, printed logos and other - often very intricate - shapes. A so called tampon is used to apply the paint. Shaped like a tennis-ball cut in half and made of rubber, the tampon first presses against an engraved metal plate on which ink is applied, and then against the dial, leaving the precise print it just picked up. The dial has to go to the oven every time a new marking is applied. All this makes for a very time-consuming and painstaking process, until the component can make it to the last stage.

It is successful? Certainly not for everyone or all watches. Your precious rare Patek Philippe isn't likely going to be a lusted after piece of wrist bling, as it is more likely to attract a fellow watch nerd than a sweet young thing. Personally, I have actually seen this work in real life. That is, women coming up to men wearing large diamond-covered watches and starting conversations. As suggested, they could just be gold-diggers, but is that so wrong when you are out and about wearing gold?

Size-wise, the Fossil Swiss Automatic is rather on the modest side at 38mm wide in a steel case. There is also a version with a steel metal bracelet which isn't too bad. The design of the watch is really not objectionable (though a few extra millimeters on the case would have been good), it is just the overall lack of soul which gets to me. In terms of this much remarked upon Swiss movement, Fossil is equally unclear on where it comes from. They call it the caliber STP-1-11 which is nothing I've ever heard of. Visually it looks like an ETA 2824 automatic but I doubt Fossil was able to get many of those. I have a feeling it is some manner of 2824 clone. At least Fossil doesn't hide the view to it on the rear of the watch. So all-in-all there you have it: the first Fossil Swiss watch with a mystery Swiss movement, impotent messaging; an acceptably saleable style; and perhaps not nearly what a brand like Fossil could accomplish with its vast resources and experience. Price is 5. fossil.com
